One-page Resume Length Check
Page count is a layout problem and a content problem. Shrinking fonts to 9pt is not a strategy. This check estimates pages from word count so you decide what to cut, not how small to type.
Use the One-page Length Check
Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Four steps
How to use this tool
- 01
Paste the full resume text, including skills and education.
- 02
Read the verdict: too thin, one page, two pages, or too long.
- 03
Cut duties that do not serve the job you want next.
- 04
Export from Resume Africa with normal margins and a readable type size.
Rules of thumb that still hold
Early career (under about 8 years): one page is the default. Internships, course projects, and every club do not all need to stay. Senior and highly technical roles can use two pages if the second page is evidence, not repetition.
Academic CVs, medical CVs with licensure, and publication lists are a different document. Do not force those onto one page. Label them as a CV, not as a one-page resume.
Word count here assumes a normal single-column layout. A designed template with huge headers will overflow a page even with "one page" of words. Fix the template, then the words.
What to cut first
Drop jobs older than 10 to 15 years unless they are the reason you are qualified (a medical degree, a military rank, a founding role). Fold old titles into a single line: "Earlier: teller, 2012–2014."
Cut "references available on request", a photo, and a paragraph of hobbies that are not the job. Keep languages, licensure, and right-to-work facts. They are short and they get you filtered in.
If the check says too thin, add results and tools, not adjectives. Empty space is not the problem. Empty claims are.
Common mistakes
- Using 9pt type and 0.3 inch margins to fake one page.
- Keeping every part-time job from campus.
- A two-page resume where page two is skills repeated as a chart.
- Deleting education to save lines when the role still screens on degree.
- Pastoring a three-page narrative "career story" into an ATS.
One-page Length Check FAQ
Is one page mandatory in Africa?
No, but it is the safest default for corporate and graduate roles. Two pages is normal for senior engineering, finance leadership, and research. Three pages is almost always too much for a job application.
Does this measure my PDF exactly?
No. It estimates from words. A designed header can push a short resume to page two. Export a simple layout to see the real page break.
What about a CV versus a resume?
In this product, resume means a job-application document. A full academic CV can run longer. Do not submit the academic CV to a one-page resume posting.
Will Resume Africa force one page?
You choose length when you export. The checker on this page is guidance so you cut with intent before you pick a layout.
